A student I had on the lesson tee this week asked me about where he was supposed to be at the top of his backswing. He had a very good swing, but that was the one area that caused his problems. He got off plane very easy just because of his position at the top of his backswing.

“Old school” taught that the right elbow should be against your ribs at the top of the swing. Times have changed. You want your elbow and forearm to be pointing down to the ground however, you can free up your swing if your upper right arm is parallel with the ground and not making contact with your rib cage. This open arm pit so to speak helps you take a fuller swing.

To get this feeling, pretend you are a waiter or waitress carrying a tray a food with your right arm. Your foream is perpendicular to the ground. This is the exact position you should be ina at the top of your backswing with your elbow out of your rib cage. You can reach up with your left hand and put it in your right hand and you have the position you want at the top.

Remember when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
