Cougars’ Lopez, Scott qualify for CCS
Â
The divers of the Central Coast Section get just three chances to qualify for the section tournament, but Christopher’s Anthony Lopez and Kaelee Scott needed just one.
Â
Lopez, a junior, qualified for CCS for the second straight year after finishing second at the first 11-dive meet of the season May 15 and 16 at the Santa Clara International Swim Center. He scored a 433.60, easily meeting the 285 point qualifying mark.Â
Â
Coach Paul Wells said Lopez dove consistently well through most of the list, scoring between 6.5 and 8 points in his first 10 dives. On the final dive, a reverse one-and-one-half somersault, he scored 5s.
Â
“In the end it made no difference in the standings since he was in solid second place with little chance to overtake an outstanding effort by (Reed) Merrit (who finished first),” Wells said. “Anthony did an amazing job—his best effort by far.”
Â
Sophomore Scott finished in 12th in her first 11-dive contest and Wells commended her on qualifying for CCS on her first try.
Â
“To qualify for CCS on her first outing is a tribute to her talent and focus,” the Cougar coach said. “With four months of diving experience, Kaelee’s gymnastic background has been a key to her rapid progress, but her courage really sets her apart.”
Â
Up until this point, Scott had only competed in dual meets where only six dives are required.
BOYS TENNIS
Shorthanded Cougars best EaglesÂ
Despite having just nine players eligible, the Christopher boys tennis team pulled out a 5-2 win over Everett Alvarez Tuesday in Salinas.Â
The Cougars had to forfeit the No. 4 singles game, but made up for it with stellar performances from their No. 1 through 3 players.Â
No. 1Â Destin Cockcroft handed the Eagles a loss, winning his match 6-3, 6-4. No. 2Â Dominic Nguyen and No. 3Â Geoffrey He followed suit, as each won their matches by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
“(Cockcrock) won…against an agile opponent, but played a very tactical game using the right shots at the right time,” Cougar coach Patrick McBrearty said. “The score does not do justice to the Alvarez player though as he fought a great fight!”
The No. 2 doubles team of Jesus Velasquez and Tom Madruga made quick work of Alvarez, winning 6-2, 6-0.Â
Â
The No. 1 doubles team, Isaiah Rugerio and Sam Fernandez, had a tougher match, but hung tough to pull out a win in the tiebreak set. The trailed 5-1 at the tie break, but turned things around to win 10-7.Â
Â
The No. 3 team of Alfredo Barberena and Michael Davalos weren’t as lucky, however, and lost 6-0, 6-0.Â
Â
Christopher will take on San Benito at 4 p.m. today in Hollister.Â
