Catch up on the past week’s action in Gilroy High swimming,
badminton and boys’ volleyball
Gilroy High’s boys and girls swimming teams returned from a month-long break to partake in dual meets with Palma and Notre Dame, respectively, Friday afternoon in Salinas.
Both Mustang squads had strong showings as the girls tied Notre Dame on points 91-all, while the boys lost on points 111-80 despite winning seven of 12 events. Gilroy’s girls won 10 out of 12 events but due to a lack of depth and no diving program, the same going for the boys, the Mustangs lost out on valuable points which would have made the victory a breeze.
The highlight of the day on the girls’ side was a Central Coast Section qualifying mark by the 200 medley relay squad, made up of Isabella Comin, Meghan Collett, Christina Raby and Alana Osaki. The foursome came in at 2 minutes and 2.3 seconds, just .29 seconds ahead of the mandatory time standard for CCS qualification.
For the boys, David Pribyl won the 100 breastroke and 100 fly in times of 1:04.5 and 56.78, respectively. Both of his times were fast enough to qualify for the CCS meet in May. Pribyl also took part in the 200 medley relay team – along with Jacob Abruzzini, Eddie Malick and Daniel Shields – which bettered a mark set in March that was already good enough to qualify for CCS. Malick was able to qualify for CCS in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.83.
Both teams will be back in the pool Wednesday when Gilroy hosts Seaside at home at 3:30 p.m. The team will then travel to Hartnell College on Thursday to take on Salinas at 3:30 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Gilroy High’s boys volleyball team sent San Benito home to Hollister with a 3-1 loss (25-18, 13-25, 25-22, 25-19) Thursday evening, improving the Mustangs’ record to 13-8 overall, 6-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League. San Benito dropped to 6-13, 4-4 TCAL.
Gilroy will be on the court at Alisal tonight at 6:30 p.m. before playing at the same time Thursday at Monterey.
BADMINTON
Gilroy High’s badminton teams lost a pair of matches last week at Sobrato (2-13) and Lincoln (6-9).
No. 3 male singles player Fernando Arrellano and No. 3 female doubles partners Karen Tayson and Heather Nguyen were the only winners in both meets.
