Prep Roundup: Feb. 3

The Gilroy wrestling team was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition at Saturday’s Overfelt Classic in San Jose.
The Mustangs, featuring four individual champions, finished 47.5 points ahead of the next best team to take the team title with 222 points. 
Nikko Villarreal (147) and Paul Fox (154) remain undefeated after each picked up wins in their respective championship bouts. Villarreal defeated Jacob Thalin from Santa Teresa by a 19-7 major decision. Fox got the tech fall on Live Oak’s Adam Mito to win 22-7.
In addition to an individual championship, Fox was named Most Outstanding Middle Weight Wrestler. 
Victor Olmos defeated Daniel Ruiz (Madera) by pin at 1:48 in the 134 lb. finals match. Matt Penyascek topped Alex Owens from Los Gatos by tech fall to win 16-1 in the 172 lb. bout.
Joseph Jauregui, Clovis East, edged Lupe Jimenez 7-3 in 140 lb. bout, while Alec Gamboa topped Mark Penyascek 11-5 in 184 lb. match. Both Mustang wrestlers finished second.
Gavin Melendez (108), Julian Carbajal (172) and Noe Garcia (184) all finished fourth for Gilroy. Mark Garcia (197) was fifth.
Gilroy will wrestle in the Mission San Jose Tournament Friday and Saturday in Fremont.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Moulden, Loo led GHS past Watsonville
Travis Moulden and Zach Loo were a gruesome twosome for the Gilroy boys basketball team Friday night.
The dastardly duo each posted 16 points in the Mustangs’ 69-48 win over league opponent Watsonville at home. 
Gilroy (9-10 overall, 4-3 in league) will continue its quest for a playoff berth at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Alisal.
MVC edges Christopher
Things were looking good for the Christopher boys basketball team at halftime. The Cougars had built a solid 21-14 lead, but Monte Vista Christian wasn’t about to go down without a fight.
Christopher lost a heartbreaker, 44-42, on the road Friday after the hosts staged a 30-point second half attack. 
Evan Shapiro led the Cougars (8-9 overall, 1-6 in league) with 12 points, followed by Shane Suttles and Dillion Day who each added eight. Suttles also had two 3-pointers in the game.
Christopher will step away from league play to take on Tokay at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. The team will return to league play at 7 p.m. Friday against San Benito. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Cougars cruise past PV
The month of January gave the Christopher girls soccer team it’s first — and only — three losses of the season. The Cougars finished the month off with a bang, however.
Zidante Okere, Vanessa Koontz and Emma Morley all scored en route to a 3-0 win over Pajaro Valley Friday.
Koontz leads the team with 13 goals this year. Jamie Boutee had two assists. 
Christopher (12-3, 4-3) will look to avenge their first loss of the year, a 1-0 decision at the hands of San Benito on Jan. 10. The Cougars will travel to Hollister to take on the Balers at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.
