Gilroy Mustangs

The Christopher boys basketball team gave its home crowd quite a show Wednesday. 
Playing at home for the first time all season, the Cougars beat Monte Vista Christian 69-60. The game also marked the beginning of Monterey Bay Gabilan League play. 
The two teams were locked at 12-12 following the first quarter when Christopher exploded to outscore MVC 26-12 in the second. That lead would carry the Cougars to victory as the visitors would notch six more points than them after the break. 
Josh Wheat led the Cougars with 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Chad Hartman posted 14 points, 12 of which came from 3s. 
Christopher (8-4, 1-0) will take to the road once again, playing at 7 p.m. Wednesday at San Benito. 
Mustangs open league with a ‘W’
One down, 11 to go. 
The Gilroy boys basketball team picked up its first Monterey Bay Pacific League win, topping Watsonville 71-38 on the road Wednesday. The Mustangs are now 5-8 overall, 1-0 in league.
Elijah Floyd led Gilroy with 12 points, his first game as a Mustang after sitting out the entire preseason due to the Central Coast Section transfer rule. 
Watsonville scored just one field goal in the first three quarters, with points coming from 3-pointers and freethrows. Gilroy had 21 field goals to the Wildcatz 4 in the game. 
Gilroy will have little rest as it returns to the court at 7 p.m. Friday to host Alisal. 
GIRLS SOCCER
Cougars top Pajaro, stay undefeated
The Christopher girls soccer team’s hot streak continues as it beat Pajaro Valley in the Monterey Bay Gabilan League opener Wednesday at home.
It was the Cougars’ sixth shutout of the season, a 6-0 decision. They have now outscored their opponents 45-2 through eight games. 
Vanessa Koontz and Jamie Boutee both scored twice and had an assist. Zidant Okere had a goal and an assist. Emma Morley added a goal, while Natalie Fillippi had two assists and Vangie McNamara had one.

Christopher (8-0, 1-0) will host San Benito (3-3-1, 1-0) at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
