The Christopher lacrosse team is off to a red hot start.Â
The Cougars are a perfect 3-0 in the early season after recording a 9-7 win over Watsonville Wednesday at home.Â
Anthony Sammut led Christopher with five goals against Watsonville. Cougars Austin Reichert, Brad Charron, Zach Green and Esteban Favela each added a goal in the game. Favela also had two assists and Green had one. Andrew Busch and Kevin Yamaoka also had an assist a piece.
Christopher will take on Soquel at 4 p.m. today on the road.
BASEBALL
Salinas edge Cougars
The Cowboys scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to top to edge out Christopher 3-2 Thursday at Salinas High.Â
Christopher scored a run in the top of the first and another in top of the third to take a 2-1 lead over the Cowboys.Â
This is the third straight loss for Christopher, dropping them to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in league play. It looks to rebound against the Mustangs at 4 p.m. today at Gilroy.Â
Gilroy falls to MVC
For the second straight game, it took just one run to decide the outcome.Â
The Mustangs lost 4-3 to Monte Vista Christian at home Wednesday.Â
Stats and scoring from this game are not yet available.Â
Gilroy (2-10 overall, 1-7 in league) will host Christopher at 4 p.m. today.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Cougars fall to Seaside
Christopher was nipping Spartans’ heels all night, but couldn’t seem to gain the advantage.Â
Seaside topped Christopher 3-1 on the road Thursday, handing the Cougars their third straight loss.Â
The Spartans won the first set 26-24, but Christopher took the second 26-24.
Seaside then recorded a dominant 25-17 win before securing the victory in Set 4 with a 26-24 win.
Christopher (5-6 overall, 1-3 in league) will play in the Wildcatz Tournament Saturday in Watsonville.
SOFTBALL
Gilroy tops Salinas
The Mustangs recorded their first league win behind a strong performance from ace Lauren Castro.Â
Castro allowed just three hits and struck out seven through seven innings for Gilroy, helping it to a 5-0 win over Salinas Thursday at home.Â
The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Alexis Conlon scored off a Cowboys’ error.Â
Liezl Clark led off the bottom of the third with a double and crossed the plate when Castro hit a hard line drive to left field, putting Gilroy up 2-0.Â
Clark scored again in the fifth off a Salinas error. Another error a few plays later allowed Makenna Weiler to score. Gilroy pushed its final run across Adrianna Figone singled to score Conlon.Â
Gilroy, 5-8 overall, 1-1 in league, will play in the Mission City Tournament today and Saturday at Mission College.
North Salinas blanks Christopher
Christopher kicked off league play Thursday, but not the way it hoped.Â
The Cougars were shutout 11-0 by North Salinas Thursday.Â
The Viking scored three runs in the top of the first, five in the third and three more in the fifth for the final. They outhit Christopher 12-3.Â
