Gilroy Mustangs

While most people were spending the holiday relaxing, Christopher was getting busy at Spikefest I.
The Cougars battled through five games Saturday to come out with a 3-2 record at the tournament. After losing 2-0 to Presentation in the tournament opener, Christopher rebounded with wins over Harbor (2-1) and Amador Valley (2-0). It then fell to St. Ignatius 2-0, but closed out competition on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Woodside.
Samantha Dolan led the offense, racking up 37 kills through five games. Katelyn Viray was close behind with 27 in addition to 42 digs. Christa Arroyo shined at setter with 85 assists and eight aces in the tournament. Marielle Gomez notched 51 digs for the Cougars at Spikefest.
The team struggled against Presentation, losing 12-25, 14-25. It came roaring back against Harbor, however. After dropping the first set 21-25, the Cougars went on to win 25-18, 15-13, thanks to a combined 21 kills from Viray and Dolan.
Christopher knocked off Amador Valley with scores of 25-21, 28-26. Dolan racked up 11 kills in this game and was complemented by Viray’s 18 digs and Arroyo’s 22 assists.
Things got much tougher against St. Ignatius. Christopher lost 5-25, 16-25 and scored just seven kills in the match.
The Cougars dropped the first set to Woodside 18-25, but rebounded with wins by scores of 25-20 and 18-16.
Christopher (4-2) will be back on the court at 6:30 p.m. tonight at St. Francis in Watsonville.
FIELD HOCKEY
Cougars fall to Branham
Christopher field hockey dropped its season opener 3-2 to Branham Thursday on the road.
Clare McCarry notched both goals for the Cougars. Bailey Howard was stellar in the net, coming up with keys saves in the game.
Despite the outcome, first-year Cougar coach Dani Hemeon said she was proud of her team’s effort.
“I was really impressed with our midfield’s ability to transfer the ball and move the ball up field,” Hemeon said. “Isabelle Medina and Erin Mank were the heart of our midfield…Also, Alyssa Landeros and Emily Fredricks had many great plays on defense.”
Christopher (0-1) will play its home opener against Leland at 3:30 p.m. today.
