Dear Editor:
Every time I pass the corner of First and Church Streets I think, “Good for Mr. Pinheiro!” He bought older houses, which were built years ago when this area was strictly residential, and transformed the entire southeast corner into his very attractive business site, combining it with neat apartments. In doing so he preserved some of Gilroy’s architectural character. He also kept some memories alive.
Seventy years ago, when I was a first grader at St. Mary’s Academy across the street, my little friend Dolores lived in one of those houses. Other older homes in our core have been transformed into businesses as well. And it does contribute charm and preservation to our town.
It is called ingenuity, community pride, and caring. I admire those qualities in Al Pinheiro. And I admire his real passion for our “heart,” which is the historic downtown area. It seems to me that it is very important to keep our heart healthy if we are to continue to prosper. This he seems dedicated in doing. Good for Mr. Pinheiro!
