An 11 p.m. Sunday structure fire near the intersection of Church Street and Columbet Avenue left a horse with burn wounds, one car completely unrecognizable, a barn charred and the roof of one home damaged, according to Jim Crawford, battalion chief for the South Santa Clara County Fire District and CalFire.
Crews from the Santa Clara County Fire Department, Gilroy Fire Department and San Jose Fire Department were on hand battling the blazes throughout the evening according to Crawford. He said no humans were injured, and said the horse was treated by a veterinarian and taken to one of the large animal hospitals in the area.
When engines arrived at the scene, Crawford said crews discovered a barn and vehicle on fire, with flames raging 12 to 15 feet away from the home. According Crawford, crews accessed the barn from Columbet Avenue, and were able to keep the fire out of house, which received some roof damage.
“Crews were on it all night,” he said over the phone, saying the blaze was contained by Monday morning. “I saw the car in the morning, and couldn’t even tell what kind of car it was.”
Crawford said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and that fire personnel have been investigating the fire site all day today.
