What’s up with the streets being barricaded and parking being blocked on Fourth and Sixth streets?
Red Phone:
Dear Blocked:
The barricades have been put up for temporary dumpster locations as part of the city’s Alley Beautification Day. At the request of city council, the Environmental Programs staff organized Alley Beautification Days. Today is the fifth of six events. Dumpsters supplied by South Valley Disposal and Recycling are available today from 8am to noon for residents to get rid of their crap. Dumpsters are located at Fourth and Dowdy Streets, Fifth and Dowdy Streets, Sixth and Dowdy Streets, Fourth and Rosanna Streets, Fifth and Rosanna Streets, and Sixth and Rosanna Streets. This is a component of a larger project to improve alleyways in Gilroy. Cleanup days are the first step; next will be tree trimming and street repairs. The idea is to get all of the junk out of the alleys as well as out of peoples houses because junk piled in a backyards often ends up in the alleys. Dumpsters are available to neighborhood residents only (no commercial use). Toss in furniture, mattresses and photos of old lovers. Special bins will be provided for old metal appliances such as washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters. Go ahead, give your summer a fresh start. The next cleanup day will take place June 30.
strawberry fields forever
I am fed up with Gilroy’s city streets and corners feeling like a third-world country with impromptu markets set up all over the place. you’re living in million dollar homes in middle of Gilroy and you then you add all these guys that don’t have green cards and don’t speak English selling your strawberries – that are illegal because they haven’t got a board of health certificate. The police don’t do anything about it. i saw one cop stop and buy stuff from these guys. It actually makes me sick. it’s absolutely wrong and somebody needs to do something about it.
Red Phone:
Dear Food Sickness:
As Red Phone understands it, the job of the local police is to neither enforce federal immigration law, nor Santa Clara County health and safety ordinances. We’re not sure what the tie is between million-dollar homes and “these guys” – that may be an issue you need to resolve within yourself. Any person conducting business within the city of Gilroy must have a business license. If you believe someone is operating without the proper licensing, you can contact the city’s finance department, which handles business licenses, at 846-0420. We also suggest contacting the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. ICE was created in March 2003, and is the largest investigative branch of the Department of Homeland Security. It was created to more effectively enforce immigration laws. Let them know about the rouge strawberry sellers.
