Red Phone: Dear Safety Conscious, You bring up a good point. Many people may not be aware that they could potentially be hindering an emergency vehicle by parking in the alley.
“Alleys are public ways just like streets and sidewalks and are not to be blocked,” said Gilroy Fire Marshall Jackie Bretschneider. “The fire department can and does use alleys for access, although typically the response is to the front door.”
While garbage cans pose little threat to emergency vehicles, cars could have to be towed if they are in the way, she said.
Police will take a look at the alley and see if there is anything that can be done to keep it clear, she said. Often times it is tough for police to ticket a car because it could be moved before they get there. Bretschneider recommends leaving an address if there is a particularly problematic area.
