“I am a resident in the Carriage Hills area and the park there has become extremely overgrown and unkempt. I also saw a young boy actually mowing the grass with his family’s lawnmower. He stated he would have done the whole park – but it was too much. He ended up clearing just enough area so he and his friends could play baseball. He actually shaped it that way too. What is the status of maintenance for Gilroy parks? I understand that budgets are tight, but we cannot let a valuable asset like our parks become overgrown. It becomes a reflection of the town and people.”
Red Phone: Dear Grown Over, City staff takes pride in keeping Gilroy parks looking good. With the recent rains, some areas the city maintains have grown quicker than normal, and the crews have had a tough time maintaining the field as they would like due to wet conditions, said Parks and Landscape Supervisor Bill Headley. During the heavy rain a few weeks ago, the crews were not able to go out at all during the week, he said.
“The open turf grass play area is being routinely maintained and mowed,” Headley said. “If the question is about the non-turf transition areas between the formal park pathway and the channel fence, the vegetation is normally mowed once a year after vegetation starts turning brown and stops growing. City maintenance staff are working hard to keep ahead of spring growth after the late rains and graffiti vandalism.”

Performing at Garlic Festival
“Hey Red Phone, just wondering who to contact in order to have a band considered for booking at the upcoming Garlic Festival? Thanks.”
Red Phone: Dear Last-Minute Jammer, Unfortunately The Garlic Festival Association stopped taking applications March 12 for groups to perform at this year’s festival. But it is never too early to start thinking about next year. Applications will be up in January at gilroygarlicfestival.com.
