Hello, I was wondering when the street light on Forest and Sixth
streets was going to be fixed.
“Hello, I was wondering when the street light on Forest and Sixth streets was going to be fixed. They’ve had the PG&E stand there for a couple months. Thanks.”
Red Phone: Dear Left In The Dark, There are actually three poles on Sixth Street that have been knocked down recently and need to be repaired. The city’s maintenance company has ordered new poles from the manufacturer, and they are scheduled to arrive this week, said City Traffic Engineer Don Dey.
“Our maintenance contractor has indicated as soon as they get in, they will start work on re-installing them,” he said.
Two of the three poles should be up and operational by the end of June, Dey said. But the third one could take several months since the manufacturer’s production run was missed. Usually new generic poles can be added, but the ones in this area have to be specially ordered every time they go down.
“It’s never taken this long before,” Dey said. “We are working with our contractor to see if there is way to have some type of temporary poles in stock so we could have light until the permanent ones come in.”
Dey said he knows there will always be accidents and said he wasn’t surprised to see three poles down in a small area.
“Accidents usually go in cycles,” he said. “Sometimes they will happen on a weekly or monthly basis and sometimes you will go a long time without one.”
What were helicopters doing?
“I was just wondering if you could tell us what the helicopter or helicopters were doing flying so low at a high rate of speed last night (June 9) between 11:30 and 12 p.m. One looked like it had no flying lights on, while it appeared to be followed by another helicopter. They were flying over the Longmeadow Drive /Santa Teresa Boulevard area.”
Red Phone: Dear Flying Low, Since the Gilroy Police Department doesn’t have it’s own helicopter, Red Phone contacted California Highway Patrol and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department who both didn’t have a record of any law enforcement activity involving helicopters in the area during the time you specified.
“We also have no records of any incident in the area of Santa Teresa and Longmeadow besides a vehicle that was broken down,” said CHP Public Information Officer Jaime Rios. “Furthermore, we did not receive any calls on helicopters.”
Rick Sung, the Sheriff’s public information officer, also said that after checking with the radio officers that there was no incident logged at that time and deputies didn’t respond to any incidents there. He said it could have been a private helicopter but didn’t know for sure.
Anyone who has any information on the mystery helicopters is welcome to let Red Phone know.
