“A few of us who live on Kentwood Court are worried about our regular postman who we heard got attacked by a pit bull on the east side of town. We haven’t seen him and were wondering what is happening.”
Red Phone: Dear Concerned Resident, your postman was indeed one of two carriers who have been attacked by dogs in the last three weeks, confirmed Gilroy Postmaster Penny Yates.
Both carriers sustained “serious bites” but both have since returned to work, Yates said. She said she could not comment on the extent of their injuries because of privacy concerns.
The attacks occurred on Hanna Street and on Springdale Court and were by a pit bull and a pit bull mix, Yates said.
“Attacks like this are not uncommon, especially during this time of year,” she said. “People don’t contain their dogs. When the kids go outside, a lot of times dogs will follow them out.”
Yates urged people to make sure their pets are tied up.
“I think people don’t really understand that they are liable if their pets get loose,” she said. “Automatically, it will cost them $2,000 at the minimum, and if the dog isn’t current on all of its shots, the police will take it.”
And to top it off, you may not get your mail.
“If there are dogs loose, carriers are instructed not to deliver there,” Yates said.
So, good readers, go to your local pet store and pay the few dollars for a leash. It could save you, and your carrier, a lot of headaches later on.
A flea market at Wal-Mart?
“I heard that a flea market is moving into the old Wal-Mart building. Any truth to the rumor?”
Red Phone: Dear Could It Be, We haven’t heard any rumors like that for the 125,000-square-foot building on Arroyo Circle that closed in 2005. And the Gilroy Economic Development Corporation hasn’t heard anything yet either.
“At this time our office has not had received any word of a flea market possibly locating to the former Wal-Mart building, said Pamela Guerra with the Economic Development Corporation.
Bill Cann, a broker with Hudson Jones Commercial Brokerage in San Jose, is still seeking a tenant or tenants for the building. There was some interest initially, but that has since waned with the economy, a company representative said. But stay tuned, and we’ll let you know when we find out more.
A flea market downtown?
“There was a big sign on a pole at 10th and Monterey ‘Flea Market Downtown Saturday.’ I walked from Sixth to Second Street and couldn’t find any traces. I asked the lady at the tourist center. She called her boss who said she had heard ‘something somewhere’ about it, maybe in an alley off Fourth Street. There were no traces there on either side of Monterey. Does anyone know where it happened? Why didn’t they put an address on the sign?”
Red Phone: Dear Lost Bargain Hunter, While there probably isn’t a flea market coming to the old Wal-Mart, there is definitely a flea market downtown held every second and fourth Saturday of the months from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is possible the sign was left up during an off week. But the flea will be held this week. It will be set up off Monterey Street between Third and Fourth streets. There is space available for this week’s flea market, and promoters are looking for more non-profits to come. Entry is $25 and is free for nonprofits. To reserve a space, you can call 612-5638.
