“I was wondering about the fruit stand going east on Highway 152. Traffic there is like playing vehicle Russian roulette. How did they go from a fruit stand to an outside Home Depot? Have you seen the stuff they sell, tires, toilets, doors, junk? I know this area is in the county, but doesn’t the city give out the business license? Are we waiting for a fatality out there before someone shuts this dangerous business down? God forbid that happens, but will the city or county be liable when someone gets sued?”

Red Phone: Dear Just the Fruit, Red Phone can appreciate your concern for traffic going out of town and contacted Santa Clara County Code Enforcement Coordinator Jim Lanz last week to get his take on what could be done.

“This sounds as though it would be a violation of the county Zoning Ordinance, and I have made the referral to the Zoning Investigation section through our database this morning,” Lanz said Wednesday. “The investigator should get the referral and be able to schedule a site inspection within the next week. I will also contact a friend in the Roads and Airports Division to see if he can go by and take a look to see if here are any traffic issues that they may need to deal with.”

So good reader, it looks like the zoning/traffic brass are on. We’ll let you know what they uncover. Anyone who wants to file a complaint for an area in the non-incorporated area of the county can add their concern to the county database by calling the Department of Planning and Development at 299-5770.

And don’t forget to let the Red Phone know if you are hitting roadblocks in getting a problem solved.

Road needs some help

“There is a hazard at the Pacheco Pass and Camino Arroyo intersection. When heading north on Camino and turning left (west) onto Pacheco, the lines that divide the three left turn lanes are hardly visible. I have seen cars cut others off due to this. I have been cut off, and I just recently did so to another driver (which prompted this Red Phone post).”

Red Phone: Dear Live and Let Live, there could be a simple solution and a more complicated solution to this problem, said City Engineer Don Dey.

Dey said he put in a request with City Operations to restripe the triple left turn lane going northbound on Camino Arroyo. So hopefully that will help clarify which car has the right-of-way.

But if there is a problem with the actual intersection, he said he wasn’t sure that was something the city or Caltrans would be responsible for handling, but it would be a lot more complicated process than just adding some paint. So if in the near future the road is still a problem, give Red Phone a call again with additional details and what you think would make it better.
