Our street trees are losing their leaves. Many good people are
street into nice, big piles. However, nobody from the city or South
Valley Disposal is coming to pick them up. When, where, who do we
get onto to get this to happen because we don’t want those leaves
in our storm drains, do we?

Dear All Piled Up, It is definitely the season for our leaves to be falling all over the place but this can get messy and bothersome.
Phil Couchee, general manager of South Valley Disposal & Recycling, said residents should be putting the leaves in their yard waste carts so they can compost them. “Our street sweepers cannot pick up piles of leaves,” Couchee said.
There is also an announcement of what to do about excess leaves during the season on the homepage of the city’s Web site. “Leaves are considered yard waste so they should be put into the green yard waste container and set out on your service day,” the announcement on the site says. “Do not use plastic bags to recycle yard wastes, including leaves. It contaminates the composting process. (They will not be picked up.) You may have, in addition to the 96-gallon green yard waste toter, up to seven additional 32-gallon old garbage cans, boxes or bundles (bundles are usually for branches or brush) of yard waste every week.”
Anyone with questions can call the community services operations division at 846-0444. Red Phone hopes this answers your question, good reader. And if you happen to have too many leaves sitting around in those big piles, relax and jump on top like children do. Have fun this season.
What do I do with this now?
“Our vacuum cleaner recently died and I would like to know the best way to dispose of it.”
Dear Environmentally-Conscious, It’s great that you are trying to do your part in keeping the town clean and “green.”
Phil Couchee, general manager of South Valley Disposal & Recycling, said you really have no reason to worry.
“There is nothing in an old vacuum cleaner that would prevent it from being thrown in the normal garbage container,” Couchee said.
Although, remember that a vacuum cleaner is fairly big and will take up a lot of room in the garbage container. So you might want to dispose of it before the holiday’s used boxes and wrapping paper fill up the container.
Other options in lieu of yearly contest
“I’m very saddened you’re not having the Christmas contest for the homes that are decorated. Those of us that do it really don’t do it for the prize, we do it for the map in the paper so that people know we have decorated. To make everybody happy. I really hope that since you’re not having the contest this year, that some of your reporters will take their cameras and cruise the town and get some pictures and make a map so people know where to come and see our decorations.”
Dear Crowd-Pleaser, Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, due to limited space in the paper, we can’t devote as much space to the our town’s decorated houses like we have done in the past.
But, we’d still like to recognize your creativity with an online photo gallery of decorated houses. We will have a map online at www.gilroydispatch.com featuring many of these brightly lit spectacles. To submit your photos and the location of your favorite houses, e-mail

Something you have to see
“I’m calling about there being no Christmas contest this year if there are places to go. They have a lot of decorations for little kids out there at 621 La Sierra in Gilroy. It’s fun and free to watch and Santa is there in the evenings giving out candy.”
Dear Informed, Thank you, good reader, for the tip. That sounds like a great house to check out this season. We’ll include it on our map.
