“My son rides out on the trails at Uvas. They call it the dirt jump. They go there and have a good time. They aren’t riding on the streets. They are a bunch of boys who have a good time and don’t hurt anybody. It is something to do, which Gilroy is a little short of. At the bike park at Las Animas Park, there are a lot of kids, a lot of drugs and a lot of things going on. It is not as safe as in Uvas Creek. It sounds ridiculous, but that is the way it is. There is a lot worse things that the kids could be doing. I want to cast my vote in to leave them alone and let them ride. If you want them out there to do restoration work on the creek, let us know. My kids will do it. There is a whole gang of them who are willing to help. Just let us know.”
Red Phone: Dear Looking To Help, You’re actually in luck. The city is holding a creek cleanup day at Uvas Creek from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday starting at Christmas Hill Park. It is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to come out and help make the city a little better. One group of volunteers will head north from the park toward the Santa Teresa bridge while another group will head south toward Thomas Road, said Sandra Sammut, Gilroy’s volunteer program coordinator. But if you can’t make it, there are plenty more opportunities to help, such as with the kids triathlon July 10 at Gilroy High School. Sammut hopes to have 150 volunteers for that event.
The city keeps a large database of 500 to 600 people who are ongoing volunteers or who help with special events, she said. Anyone interested in volunteering can fill out a form at www.cityofgilroy.org with the areas they are interested in.
“We try to match everyone with their skills and interests,” Sammut said. “Sometimes it’s hard because we’ve actually had a lot of people wanting to help.”
