Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department is hosting the 2007 Spring Classic Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament at 10am Saturday, June 2 at the Gilroy Community Center.

The event, which uses all proceeds to benefit senior, teen and youth programs in the department, is open to four-person teams. The recreational tournament continues registration through 5pm today. The team entry fee is $60.

The Spring Classic is the 12th in a series of Texas Hold ‘Em offerings produced by the department.

South Valley Orchestra Performs

Gilroy – The South Valley Youth Orchestra and Preparatory Strings will perform their spring concert at 7pm tonight, in the Gilroy High School Theatre at 10th and Princevalle streets, and will be conducted by Joey Fortino and Lori Franke. Admission is free.

Cannery Builder Elects New Officers

Gilroy – New officers were elected to the South County Housing Corporation Board of Directors following a record-breaking year of housing construction, including the start of the more than 200-unit Cannery project in Gilroy, and with plans for more than 1,400 new units in the near future.

Veteran board members Douglas Kuerschner and Joseph M. Postigo were elected to two-year terms as president and vice president, respectively, during the annual board meeting May 14. Both reside in Hollister. Julia Starling of Morgan Hill was elected secretary and Monica Toumani of San Jose was re-elected treasurer.

South County Housing builds affordable homes and apartments and provides a wide range of neighborhood services for very-low- to moderate-income households in south Santa Clara, Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties. Founded in Gilroy in 1979, it has built more than 2,200 houses and apartments and expects to complete another 1,400 units during the coming five years.

Kuerschner, a real estate agent, has served on the SCH board since 1992. Prior to his election as president, he served as the board secretary. Postigo, owner of JMP Construction, joined the board in 2001. Starling has served on the board sine 1994 and is a retired eligibility worker for Santa Clara County. Toumani, a controller for the Arts Council of Silicon Valley, has been on the board since 1992. The board is made up of 11 members, including two low-income representatives, from the communities served by SCH.

Free Meals at Gav Child Center

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Child Development Center announces renewed sponsorship of the U.S.D.A. Child and Adult Care Food Program for the academic year 2007-2008.

The Gavilan College Child Development Center offers three subsidized childcare programs that are designed for families with financial challenges. The general campus and general child care preschool are provided for children who have at least one parent enrolled at Gavilan College. Students enrolled in six or more units with the highest financial need have priority.

In addition to the subsidized programs, the center has family-paid programs which are open to the community. Gavilan College Child Development Center provides a safe, loving, secure environment that fosters each child’s unique cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language development within a well-planned environment.

The center is located in a state-of-the-art facility on the Gavilan College Gilroy campus.

Discussion Presents Career Information

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Workability III Program presents a career information panel discussion featuring several speakers. The free event, from 9:45 to 11am Thursday, is open to the public. The panel will discuss how students can improve their interviewing skills, how to make a good impression, tips on writing impressive resumes, networking techniques, how to make connections and build relationships. Scheduled speakers are Martha Bell, Silicon Valley Independent Living Council; Mike Kennedy, Granite Construction; Nancy Lepow, Westaff; Lisa Sheftman, Stanford University; and Shairon Williams, Gavilan College.

Refreshments will be provided. The discussion takes place at Gavilan College Student Center north lounge, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Sue’s Coffee Hosts Free Shows

Gilroy – Sue’s Coffee presents several Friday night shows this summer. The are:

n David Rebb Firman, Friday. Folk Rock Americana with David Rebb Firman on guitar and vocals. His song “This Cowboy Is An Indian,” won the Broadjam.com winning song with its exceptional vocals,instrumentation and all around professional sound.

n High Voltage, June 8. Classic Rock from the ’70s and ’80s. High volume drums, guitar, bass and vocals will have you dancing.

n Kelly McDonald, June 15. Real country music and western rock and roll. A little of Chris LeDoux, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and John Conlee with nuance, ache and spunk.

n High Voltage, June 22. With revival and some Rolling Stones mixed in, enjoy a evening of classic rock.

n Kate Pearson, June 29. On tour from Boston, this singer/songwriter sings witty lyrics, plays clever melodies and beautiful string arrangements in a folk rock/acoustic style.

Las Madres New Members Brunch

Gilroy – Las Madres will hold their Annual Brunch from 11am to 1pm, Saturday, at Goldsmith Seeds located on 2280 Hecker Pass Highway, and meet local moms and moms-to-be.

Las Madres is a nonprofit network of neighborhood playgroups where members find friendship, support and helpful information, as well as an opportunity for their children to make friends their own age.

Italian Festa And Charity Benefit

Hollister – The third annual Italian Festa and Charity Benefit will be held from 10:30am to 6pm, Saturday June 2 at Casa De Fruta. Authentic Italian food, dancing and Italian games including bocce ball will entertain guests. Adults pay $35 and children younger than 12 pay $15. Children younger than 5 are free.

The donation includes a meal and dancing.
