Last week, alumni from the Gilroy High School choir landed in Japan and were greeted with open arms by their hosts in Takko-machi. The group of alumni then performed for their hosts, kicking off their week-long reunion tour.

I have appreciated this opportunity to sing in Takko more than I can express. To be here again with the people of Japan, as well as old and new friends singing as a choir, is the culmination of a dream come true.

As we waved goodbye to the people of Japan back in 1995, I never thought in a million years I would be here again. Although 13 years has diminished my memory of my brief visit, the warmth and hospitality I felt has always stayed with me.

Now, to be in Takko once again, memories have been flooding back into my mind. I remember the Garlic Center, the Tapkopian plaza where, as with many other sites in Takko in 1995, we were the first group to perform. The green lush fields of Takko are breathtaking – something you don’t see in many places in the United States. Something else you don’t see much of in the United States is the friendliness of the people. Greetings of “good morning” are spoken frequently among the residents.

Now as an adult, I feel I will be able to retain these memories even better than when I was 17. Of course, now that I have a digital camera and can take hundreds of pictures helps too! Through my photographs, I am trying to capture Takko in every form so as to never let this wonderful city leave my memory again.

I was honored to be invited by Mr. Robb to participate with this choir. I hope that I can perform to the best of my ability to honor and thank the people of Takko to honor their invitation to sing for them.
