Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.
Richard Newbold Colhoun, 80, died Sunday, June 22, at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.
He was born May 23, 1923, in Bryn Mawr, Penn. He was the son of Stephen and Mary Newbold Colhoun. He was raised on a ranch in Gilroy and attended local schools.
He owned and managed more than 20 companies from importing baler twine from Germany to distributing Toro products, building private homes to developing apartment complexes, selling John Deere earth moving equipment to garden equipment. He had an office in New York City devoted to non-traditional investments.
He was chairman of the Planning Board of Starnford, Conn., YMCA. He was president of Trinity Pawling School, Pawling, N.Y., for 23 years. He was vice president of the African Medical and Research Foundation. He was a board member of New Canaan, Conn., Eagle Hill School, Southport, Conn., and board member and Honorary Trustee of the Boothbay Region YMCA in Boothbay Harbor.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army Air Corp. He flew B-17’s and B-29’s. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling across the United states in his motor home, working outdoors and quietly helping those in need. His nickname was “Trouble.” Dick was known for his wonderful sense of humor.
He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Hess and by two sons, Craig Scott Colhoun and Richard N. Colhoun, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Canby Dushane Colhoun of Boothbay; a son, Michael Deere Colhoun of Santa Rosa; daughters Nancy Stewart Colhoun of Palm Beach, Fla., Susan Forbes Colhoun Taft of Sun Valley, Idaho; stepson, Terry Hess of New York City; stepdaughters, Betsy Hess Biskind of New York City, Lindy Hess Appleton of Cambridge, Mass.; stepson CB Dushane IV of Littleton, Colo.; stepdaughter Ann Canby Dushane of Phoenix Ariz.; grandchildren Ian Colhoun of San Francisco, Trevor Colhoun of New York City, Alexandra, Katrina and Samantha Taft of Sun Valley, Idaho, Michael D. Colhoun Jr. of Santa Rosa, Damaris D. Colhoun of Santa Rosa, Samuel and Eliza Appleton of Cambridge, Mass.
At the request of the deceased there will be no services.
