The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

CHEERS: For the Gilroy City Council which rejected the request to lower the age limit at Village Green from 62 to 55. That project at the Gateway to Hecker Pass has been a boondoggle from the beginning, but the bottom line is that the Village Green housing complex only received approval because of its specialized housing promise. If the City Council doesn’t hold developers to their promises, and sends a message that it’s OK to change the rules willy nilly, our city’s planning problems will mushroom. That 7-0 vote is a welcome and solid statement from the Council.

JEERS: For the news that former City Councilman Tony Sudol, a former Cisco employee, is being sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for allegedly passing on insider information to his brothers resulting in huge profits. Sudol wouldn’t comment, but the SEC alleges that his brothers banked more than $400,000 after receiving non-public information. The SEC case appears to be strong and, if the allegations turn out to be true, that’s another black eye for business and personal ethics in America stained by a former Gilroy public official.

CHEERS: For the recent migration of painted lady butterflies through the South Valley. How cool to see Mother Nature in full flight fluttering through the fields and the urban landscape. In a busy world, the butterflies were a welcome respite.

CHEERS: For the life of Pope John Paul II, a man of conviction and peace who spoke truth to the world and served as a barometer for justice. His love for youth, his loathing of war and his respect for all human life were beacons of light in a world filled with shadow.

JEERS: For the misleading library election mailer. It’s too bad when political hacks take over what should be grassroots campaigns. Trumpeting “Don’t let the Gilroy Library close” on a mailer is terribly misleading and whoever made the decision to go forward with that campaign piece should not be allowed to make any further political decisions. Hopefully, voters will overlook this transgression and vote Yes on Measures A and B.

JEERS: For ever-skyward gas prices. It’s time for America to invest in solar energy, put teeth into new laws requiring greater automobile fuel efficiency and generally get our house in order so that our entire economy is not subject to being a hostage of oil prices, which are not likely to fall anytime soon. Alternative sources of energy are essential to the long-term stability of our nation.
