CaNYONVILLE, ORE.
Kelsey “The Road Warrior” Jeffries recently had to give a two-minute speech about how she mentally prepares for a fight in one of the classes she is taking at Gavilan college.
“I’m walking around talking about the weigh-in, walking into the ring – people never heard nothing like that before,” Jeffries said. “I think people were shocked by it.”
Saturday night at Seven Feathers Casino and Resort in Canyonville, Ore., Jeffries will let her hands do the talking. And it would be shocking if they have anything nice to say.
Fighting for the Global Boxing Union World Title against Elizabeth “The Pearl” Villarreal (4-4-2), Jeffries (38-9-1, 3 KOs) intends on making The Pearl shine a darker shade Saturday night.
“I’ll be teaching her a few things,” Jeffries said by phone Thursday. “But, I gotta be smart because she’s wild and big and you gotta be careful about those lucky shots, because if you don’t see those big ones, I’ll be on my butt. But that won’t happen.”
Entering the Featherweight fight at a trim 124 pounds, Jeffries said she plans on relaxing today and keeping her mind off the bout until the weigh-in. After that, the focus leading up to the fight will be consuming.
“I try not to get into it yet,” she said. “But the day of the fight, I start focusing on what I gotta do – my game. A little more serious you could say.”
Another thing Jeffries is serious about are her superstitions. While there are only two of them, the Gilroy boxer doesn’t play around when it comes to her pre-fight meal and a talisman.
“I like to eat a Mexican shrimp soup called Caldo de Camarón,” Jeffries said. “We find it no matter where we go.”
The other is a rosary her grandmother gave her,
“She gave it to me before I went to Mexico and fought in Cancun,” Jeffries said. “It worked because I kicked the s— out of that girl.”
The overwhelming favorite, Jeffries already has a post-fight celebration set up that will play out similar to the first scene of the movie “Goodfellas”.
Manager Bruce Anderson and a Casino employee will escort her through the back entrance of the Resort’s restaurant, leading through the kitchen until she is brought out to music, good food and friends at a private table. Jeffries did something similar in her last fight at Seven Feathers.
“That’s it,” she said. “We have a big party. It’s a Kelsey party in a big room. That’s my favorite thing.”
That, and adding to her waist-line with another championship belt.
