Over the past year, Elizabeth Rodriguez proved to be one of the finest female fighters in the country for her age and weight. On Jan. 6, Rodriguez’ “season” came to a close as she took second place at the 2008 Region VIII Silver Gloves Championships held in Norwalk, Calif.
Battling Victoria Cordova of New Mexico, the 90-pound Gilroy native lost a close decision, capping an impressive run through the amateur ranks over the past 12 months.
Training under her father Jerry, who runs Left2Right Boxing Club in Gilroy, Elizabeth not only had to take on all comers, but also had to fight temptations that just about everyone faces in the winter: Holiday treats.
In order to train for her bout properly, Rodriguez had to keep away from the snacks that often cause New Year’s resolutions.
The result was one of her finest fights to date, according to her trainer.
“While everyone was getting ready for Christmas, my daughter was getting ready for her championship fight,” Jerry said. “Her fight was one thing, fighting off all the goodies was another.”
Elizabeth didn’t capture the Western Regional crown, which would have pushed her on to a national competition, but she does already hold two state championships – a Police Academy League state title and the Silver Gloves State Championship.
The second of those titles allowed her to take part in the most recent bout.
While Rodriguez and family are not sure what the fighter’s next move will be, they did want to thank Town Plaza Barber Shop for its support and sponsorship.
