The Gilroy Elks Lodge #1567 recently announced the results of its Dictionary Program.
During the first two months of 2015 the Gilroy Elk Lodge distributed more than 870 dictionaries to Gilroy Unified School District third graders. The Gilroy Elks Lodge restarted participation in the program when another organization was unable to continue it in Gilroy. Lodge representatives presented the dictionaries, personalized with each child’s name, to every student.
The goal of the program is to assist students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.
The Lodge thanks Gilroy Unified School District for its support in allowing members access to schools to distribute the dictionaries.
