Playoff implications, league championships at stake for GHS
teams.
A busy final week of regular season prep action begins today as the Gilroy High baseball team squares off against Tri-County Athletic League opponent Everett Alvarez on Senior Day in Gilroy.
The Mustangs, (15-8-1, 11-4 TCAL) who have 11 seniors on their roster, currently hold down the second spot in league, but will play back-to-back games against rival San Benito on Wednesday and Thursday, both of which are in Hollister.
The Balers all but have the league crown locked up, needing a win over Alisal today to earn at least a share of the championship.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs are looking to hold off Palma, who sits in third at 11-5 in league, for the automatic bid to the Division I Central Coast Section playoffs that comes along with finishing in the top two.
Game time today is set for 4 p.m. Both contests in Hollister are scheduled for 4 p.m. first pitches.
Also on the docket today are the TCAL Track and Field Trials at North Salinas.
The GHS girls’ squad (5-1) holds a piece of first place along with San Benito, heading into the trails and ultimately the league finals on Friday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
The name of the game today is to qualify as many athletes into the finals. The more points earned there, the better a chance the Lady Mustangs have of grasping a league championship. The boys are also in the mix at 4-2, but will have a bit more work to do to finish at the top of the heap.
With Notre Dame (21-4, 9-2 TCAL) knocking the Lady Balers from the ranks of the unbeaten in TCAL softball action last Friday, the Lady Mustangs (14-6, 8-2 TCAL) are still in the hunt for a league championship.
They travel to take on North Salinas today for the first of two remaining games on the schedule.
The Lady Balers and Spirits collide again today. If San Benito wins, they clinch at least a tie for first.
If Notre Dame prevails, it keeps alive the possibility of a three-way tie, providing GHS upsets the Lady Balers (19-3, 8-1 TCAL) on Thursday.
