The Gilroy High baseball team beat non-league opponent Milpitas 8-2 in its season debut Thursday. Senior Jordan Dexter went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Jaylan Gallardo had two RBIs and Bubu Garcia one for GHS.
• Gavilan scored a combined six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to erase a four-run deficit and push its Coast Conference record to 2-0 in a 6-4 victory over visiting Skyline College on Thursday.
Chad Badger spelled starting pitcher Chris Bradley in the seventh inning and retired all nine batters he faced. Meanwhile, the Rams offense came to life in the latter third of the contest.
Gavilan (9-5 overall) tied the game 4-4 in the bottom seventh, using RBI hits from Cal Tashiro, Julio Cortez and Kenny Hall, and a run scored via balk.
Skyline surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth, allowing the Rams to scoot ahead, 6-4.
• The Christopher High boys varsity volleyball team outlasted Palma in a five-set thriller 23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-14, 15-11 in the teams’ Tri-County Athletic League Valley Division opener Thursday night in Gilroy.
Down two-sets-to-one, the Cougars (1-1 overall) staved off defeat with two straight set victories, including the winner-take-all fifth.
John Day had six aces and Manny Salcedo contributed five aces. Setter Ryan Tabilas had 17 assists and four aces. Justin Laveroni led the way for the Cougars with 11 kills.
