Dear Editor:

A hearty THANK YOU to the Gilroy Dispatch for publishing a splendid article on the South Valley Symphony orchestra in the Oct. 11 edition. I am quite certain that this had a most positive effect in assisting the symphony’s board of directors in attaining one of their goals for the 2002-2003 season, a standing room only audience for the opening concert held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Gavilan College Theater.

All 436 seats of the theater were occupied by an enthusiastic audience who responded with numerous standing ovations for members of the orchestra, the piano soloist Anna Gingis who gave a splendid rendition of Tchaicovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and the Gavilan College Choir under the direction of Phil Robb.

I would like to extend my personal thanks to all who support the symphony through program advertisements, donations, season ticket holders and those large business firms who contributed most generously including South Valley National Bank, Wells Fargo Foundation, Target Stores, Gilroy Assistance League, Arts Council of Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Arts Foundation and the Gilroy Rotary Club.

My thanks and gratitude to all the musicians of the orchestra who volunteer their time and effort to make these musical presentations possible. We are fortunate indeed to have two fine musical organizations in our community with the South Valley Symphony and the Gavilan College Choir. If you missed the Oct. 12 concert both groups will appear together again on Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. at the Gavilan College Theater. Plan on arriving early however as this is a free concert to the public and will, in all probability, be standing room only.

In conclusion, considering the size of our community, we are indeed fortunate to have two outstanding cultural assets and leaders who direct them, namely Henry Mollicone with the symphony and Phil Robb with various choirs at the high school and adult education levels. Two more reasons why the quality of life in Gilroy is great.

Alfred J. Navarolli, Gilroy, President, Board of Directors, South Valley Symphony
