SAN BENITO COUNTY – Caltrans officials announced on Friday that the $6.2 million project to improve Highway 25 from Hollister to the Santa Clara County line was completed Nov. 5 – six weeks ahead of schedule.

Improvements constructed by the project focus on safety in an effort to reduce the amount of accidents on the highway, according to Caltrans.

With construction finished, Highway 25 from Gilroy to Hollister is now a no-passing zone. Other changes to the highway include the widening of the existing median to four feet and the installation of rumble strips – the grooves cut into the pavement perpendicular to the direction of travel to remind motorists when they drift out of a lane of traffic.

The outside shoulders in both directions of travel have also been widened to 10 feet, and a southbound turn pocket at Flynn Road in now in place.

The safety improvements were completed at the recommendation of the Highway 25 Corridor Safety Task Force, which consists of the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, regional and local agency staff, and community representatives.

A separate project to widen out the existing median throughout the Santa Clara County area of the highway is scheduled to begin in the spring.
