Gilroy – Gilroy’s girls tennis team couldn’t hold serve at home Tuesday, falling 5-2 to Salinas.

The Mustangs dropped all of their singles matches, with its two wins coming from the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs. Kim Johnson and Natalie Toews beat Helen Park and Amber Diaz 7-5, 6-3 for the No. 2 victory and Anneliese Zelina and Melanie Morelos beat Audra Bell and Shelby Weber 6-3, 6-4 for the No. 3 win.

The most intense match taking place Tuesday was between Gilroy’s Emily Castro and Kristin Shimizu.

Castro battled but came up just short, losing 6-4, 6-7 (tiebreaker 8-10).

First-year coach Jami Reynolds said there is plenty of talent on the team, its just a matter of finding a comfort zone.

“We have great personalities and great tennis players,” Reynolds said. “I think we have a wonderful team. I think we were just nervous (Tuesday).”

One player that showed nerves but plenty of potential was Mischelle Tajan, who recently transferred to Gilroy after living in Texas. Tajan, GHS’ No. 1 player, lost 6-3, 6-0 to Taryn Andrews.

“I think she’s great but she’s beating herself right now,” Reynolds said during the match.

With two more contests coming this week, the squad should be able to work out some of the early season kinks. Gilroy will play at Alisal on Thursday before hosting Aptos on Friday at 3:30pm.
