A Salinas woman is still in the hospital with severe head injuries after crashing her bicycle on Saturday, police said.

At 8:55 a.m. Saturday, a 38-year-old woman riding her Trek bike south on Frazier Lake Road with a group of cyclists went over her handlebars just south of Highway 152, California Highway Patrol Officer Jaime Rios said.

“Apparently her chain got caught up in something,” Rios said. “She went headfirst into the pavement.”

The woman was wearing a helmet, he said. She was initially taken to Saint Louise Regional Hospital with severe head injuries and minor leg injuries, Rios said. From there, she was airlifted to a regional medical center in San Jose, he said. The woman was still in the hospital Monday afternoon but police expected doctors to release her Tuesday.
