that its bargaining groups have agreed to take four unpaid furlough
days this school year.
The Gilroy Unified School District will save $1.1 million now that its bargaining groups have agreed to take four unpaid furlough days this school year.
Superintendent Deborah Flores also took a voluntary pay cut of $3,242, the equivalent of four days worth of salary.
“This is quite a significant pay cut but the teachers voted in favor because we recognize that this is a difficult time for everyone,” said Michelle Nelson, Gilroy Teachers Association president. “We do appreciate that the superintendent has followed suit and volunteered to take a four day pay cut as well.”
The school board also extended the superintendent’s contract for four years and thanked her for her “excellent” service and hard work over the past three years.
As a result of furloughs, this school year will be 179 days long, instead of the usual 180. Teachers will take their three additional furlough days during nonschool days. Their furlough days contributed the bulk of the savings, at $933,000.
