September 2008 and a leadership award in May 2008. He has completed
two tours of duty in Iraq since undergoing basic training at Fort
Benning, Ga. in 2003.

Staff Sgt. Erek James Hartsell received NCO of the Year in September 2008 and a leadership award in May 2008. He has completed two tours of duty in Iraq since undergoing basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. in 2003.

Erek currently lives on base at Fort Campbell, Ky., with

his wife Laura. He will attend Drill Sergeant School on June 9, 2009 and will return in mid-August.

Erek, a 2003 graduate of Live Oak High School, is the son of Marylee and Kevin Hartsell of Morgan Hill.

Mark Starritt

Mark Starritt, a student at San Benito High School in Hollister, will participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. The program is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year and are considering applying for admission to the Academy after graduation.

Summer Seminar will teach prospective applicants about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation’s leaders.

ANNIVERSARY

Akermans celebrate 60 years

Jim and Shirley Ackerman shared their 60th wedding anniversary March 6, 2009, and gathered with friends, family and neighbors April 19 at the Bertha Briggs Building in Hollister to celebrate.

More than 100 adults and two dozen children attended, with family and friends from all over California, Arizona and Oregon.

The couple, who live in Redding, lived in Hollister for 35 years before moving north in 1984.
