Air Force Airman Carl A. Williams Jr. graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is the son of Carl Williams Sr. of El Paso, Texas, and Antoinette Cain-Melina of Gilroy. Williams is a 2010 graduate of Parkland High School, El Paso.
Rajan Bansal
Rajan J. Bansal is currently an Air Force ROTC cadet participating in field training, as well as a mock Air and Space Expeditionary Force deployment, mandatory for all individuals pursuing a commission as an officer through Air Force ROTC.
During this 28-day training, the cadets are pushed to the limit through stressful and physical situations that evaluate their ability to become an officer and help develop their team building skills.
The course is divided into three phases: The first 11 days are devoted to classroom work, drill, dorm maintenance and time management. They also participate in a leadership reaction, assault and obstacle course; try to qualify on an M-9 pistol; and learn hand to hand combat with trained Air Force Combative instructors.
The cadets are then airlifted by a C-130 aircraft to Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Miss., where they will experience a mock deployment, simulating what it would be like in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Upon returning to Maxwell, Bansal and the others will put their newly learned marching skills into work and perform a graduation parade. When they return to their colleges and universities in the fall, they will become leaders of their detachments and be one step closer to an Air Force career.
Bansal is the son of Luie and Rose Lopez of Morgan Hill.
Patrick Shields
Acceptance Day marks the Class of 2014’s transition out of Basic Cadet Training and into the Cadet Wing at the Air Force Academy.
Patrick, of Gilroy, swore his oath of office and received his shoulder boards that signify that he is a fourth class cadet or freshman at the academy.
Patrick is the son of Mel and Kim Shields and attended St. Mary School in Gilroy and Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose.
Rachel Elizabeth Nin
Rachel Elizabeth Nin, of Morgan Hill, was among 346 undergraduates named to Denison University’s spring semester dean’s list by Provost Bradley Bateman. Students who achieve dean’s list status have maintained a grade-point average of 3.7 or better (out of 4.0) for the semester. Only one of every six students achieved dean’s list distinction this spring semester.
