Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Santiago C. Fierro is currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Fierro is the son of Wendy E. Fierro of Morgan Hill and Cruz J. Fierro of Los Banos.

Fierro is one of more than 4,000 Pacific Fleet Salors and Marines who deployed aboard the ships of the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group. The majority of the Marines and Sailors in Fierro’s unit have safely returned to the ships of the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group from Mosul, Iraq, as Operation Iraqi Freedom continues to transition to humanitarian missions.

Navy Chief Petty Officer Maria C. Mercado recently returned ffrom her dployment to the Arabian Gulf after more than 100 consectuive days in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom while assigned toe the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

Mercado is a 1990 graduate of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill.

Mercado’s ship launched more than 3,000 sorties and expended 900,000 pounds of ordnance in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Scott F. Lord recently received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Lord is the grandson of Karl Dame of San Martin and is a 2000 graduate of Clark High School in Las Vegas.

Two Gilroyans graduated May 18 from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Emilie Robb, daughter of Phil and Pam Robb, graduated cum laude from the Mendoza College of Business with a degree in marketing and has accepted a position in the management training program of National City Bank in Pittsburgh, Penn.

Emilie was a 1999 graduate of Gilroy High School where she served as student body president.

ACADEMICS

Tom McGinty, son of Kevin and Diane McGinty, graduated from the College of Arts and Letters with a double major in history and political science. He will spend the next year working with the poor in Chicago as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

Tom was a 1999 graduate of Bellarmine College Prepatory in San Jose where he served as student body secretary treasurer.

Phil Robb was mentioned by University of Notre Dame President Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., in his address to the 2,700 graduates and their families.

He remarked that he had encountered a graduate’s father during a stroll around the lake on campus the previous day. He cited Robb’s deep appreciation as he led the graduates in a reflection on the value of their Notre Dame education.

Maureen McGinty of Gilroy is listed on the 2003 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Portland in Portland, Ore.

McGinty is a freshman majoring in history. Students need at least a 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for the dean’s list.
