Gilroy – Two men robbed a Morgan Hill bakery at gunpoint Thursday night, just days after the same business’ Gilroy location was attacked.

Brandishing a gun, the two men stole cash from the lone clerk at the Pink Elephant Bakery, located at 16925 Monterey St., at 7:39pm Thursday. The crime mimicked the Monday night robbery of the Gilroy Pink Elephant Bakery, located on 10th Street. Monday, two men accosted two female clerks at the bakery, stole cash from the register and split, driven away by a third man in a white four-door sedan.

“We were pretty shaken up,” said operations manager Johanna Meza, whose family owns the Pink Elephant chain, a family franchise opened in 1975. “It was the same thing, the same process – only this time, they used gloves.”

Meza said the chain is considering hiring security for the bakeries, and has contacted police to monitor its third store in San Jose.

Gilroy police described the two suspects who robbed the Gilroy store as two 30 to 35 year old Hispanic men wearing black baseball caps, one 5-feet. 6-inches tall, weighing 165 pounds, the other 5-feet, 10-inches tall, weighing 180 pounds. Morgan Hill police could not be reached Friday to describe the suspects who robbed the Morgan Hill store.

The crimes have rattled employees of the popular bakeries, which sell Mexican sweets such as pan dulce. The female clerk who was robbed Thursday night is taking two days off to recover, said Meza; the two employees robbed Monday in Gilroy were given time to recuperate as well.

“I’m afraid to go back to work,” clerk Teresa Quintero said Tuesday. Quintero has worked at Pink Elephant for a year and three months. “I don’t know if there are others, who will come and demand money … I’m very afraid, but I have to go.”
