State qualifier Ellis, Nagareda lead Gavilan golf team into
sophomore status
GILROY – As the start of its second season begins, the Gavilan College golf team is looking forward to a successful campaign on the links.
With two returning players – Brad Nagareda and top contender Chris Ellis, who made it all the way to last year’s state championship – the Rams have a sikud shot at finishing on top.
Head coach Scott Krause is once again guiding the Rams duffers. He has been the director of instruction at Eagle Ridge Golf Course for two-and-a-half years. Krause has been watching the golfers closely during each practice to see who will be playing in the top spots at each match. There are a total of 13 players on this season’s roster and they are all competing for the top spots.
The top two spots for their next match are occupied by Nagareda and Ellis, who is the team captain. Krause is hoping to finish out towards the top or even the middle this season. Last year, the Rams weren’t able to qualify as a team, but Ellis was able to qualify as an individual at the state championships.
“He’s definitely going to do well,” said Krause of Ellis. “And hopefully as a team we are going to do better.”
The course that the team will be playing is at Eagle Ridge. The course is considered both an advantage and disadvantage for the team. Eagle Ridge is one of, if not, the toughest courses in the area to play on. When they host a tournament in April, Krause is hoping that his players will be very knowledgeable of the course and use it to their advantage.
