GILROY – Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., will host “Science Alive!” on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the student center.
Science Alive is a day of hands-on workshops that make learning science and math fun. Students in grades five through eight and their parents can choose among 16 different workshops, including “Robots and You,” presented by Mark Leon of NASA, where participants will get to operate a robot hands-on; “What’s in the Box,” presented by Gavilan instructors Vic Robinson and Janet Conrey, in which students will take a computer apart and put it back together; and “A Cow’s Eye View,” presented by Dr. Dennis Harrigan of Gilroy Veterinary Hospital, will teach students the anatomy of the eye by having them dissect a cow’s eyeball. Optional workshops “Financial Aid: Money for College” and “Preparing for High School and College – What Parents Should Know” will be offered for parents in both English and Spanish.
The day will start with check-in and a welcome address by Mark Leon of NASA. Participants will then split up and attend two morning sessions. Everyone will gather together for lunch, raffle and prizes, followed by one afternoon session. Only $10 per person, including lunch. Buses will be available to transport students at no charge from Morgan Hill and Hollister.
