Preethi Balagani is the 2014 senior class co-valedictorian at Mt. Madonna School.

What are your plans after high school?
After high school, I plan to attend U.C. San Diego and major in molecular biology and minor in psychology. I hope to travel a lot as well. Later on, I am looking to pursue medical research in genetics and pediatrics.
Favorite high school memory:
My favorite high school memory is going to South Africa with my classmates the summer before our senior year. It was an amazing trip that was lots of fun as well as inspirational. We interviewed influential people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President FW De Klerk. We met local high school students and interacted with kids at orphanages. It was an unforgettable experience and definitely my favorite high school memory.
Extracurriculars:
I played for my high school varsity volleyball team for the past two years. I learned Bharatanatyam (Indian Classical Dance) since a young age and performed in many local and international programs. And I have been a part of my school’s outreach committee that volunteers and raises money for local organizations.
What inspires you?
The people who I meet throughout my life are the ones that inspire me every day. Everyone has a story and a path of how they got to the place they are today. The thing that inspires me the most is hearing those stories and the advice they have to share. Meeting other people who work hard to achieve their dreams motivates me to pursue my own dreams. There are many amazing people out there making a difference in their lives and for the people around them, often many who are not recognized for it, but they inspire me everyday to work hard, follow my passions and make a difference.
What’s your dream career?
My dream career is to become a pediatrician and open up an organization to help children in less fortunate countries have access to the medication they need in order to stay healthy.
Favorite subject:
My favorite subject is our Values in World Thought class. In this class, we read books and interviewed people whose work had affected the society in many ways, and also discuss our thoughts about ethics and values in our society. I like this class because it gives me a chance to think critically and participate in thoughtful conversations with my classmates.
What you’ll miss the most:
The things that I am going to miss most from high school are my amazing teachers and the Mount Madonna School community. They have helped me shape who I am today, given me great advice and been part of my wonderful memories of Mount Madonna, and I am really going to miss them.
Advice to incoming freshmen:
My advice to incoming freshmen would be to enjoy every moment of high school you can, take advantage of any opportunities around you to pursue the things you love to do and stay positive.
