DEAR EDITOR:
This is written in response to the current war of words over the math instruction at Gilroy High School. While I definitely agree that there is a severe problem in the math department there, that problem is most certainly NOT Wayne Scott.
My son is a senior in Mr. Scott’s AP calculus class this year, and our experience with him has been tremendously positive. He was able to simultaneously teach them their new subject, calculus, while having to re-instruct them in basic algebra. Mr. Scott is a caring, involved instructor who has gone above and beyond what any other teacher (or academic coordinator)has done for any of my three children who have been through the GHS system.
Last August, when the seniors were at school picking up their schedules, my son had a conflict in his schedule, which would have kept him out of AP calculus, which was a prerequisite for him to apply to college as an engineering major. His academic coordinator told him he couldn’t switch classes around.
Mr. Scott found an alternative schedule, signed it off, and personally walked it over to the academic coordinator for correction. He has offered a great deal of advice and encouragement to my son regarding his major, as well as excellent math instruction.
As a result, my son was accepted by eight university engineering programs for this fall.
This would not have happened without the help of an instructor that the district should be very grateful to have on board. We can never thank him enough.
