A small plane crashed near the Hollister Municipal Airport this morning, after it got about 50 feet off the ground, teetered from side to side, then careened into the ground, a witness said.

The crash occurred at some point around 7 a.m., and the pilot escaped without serious injury, according to witnesses.

Amy Bordi, who works at Don Chapin’s Quarry Plant 25 on a hill overlooking the airport runways was getting out of her car at the time and heard a plane coming her way after it had taken off, she said.

“So I turned around and looked and saw the plane kind of trying to get up to air speed,” she said. “He was off the ground and about that time, he was kind of heading this way. So I thought about that time, maybe I should get out of the way.”

Bordi estimated the double-engine plane was about 50 feet off the ground when she noticed it having trouble. She works from a trailer on a hill northwest of the airport.

“At that time, I was getting ready to move out of the area, and he crashed, and a bunch of dirt came up. And I came and I called 911.”

However, the pilot walked away from the scene, she said.

“You don’t get to see that very often, do you?”

Authorities were not immediately available for comment.

More details will be posted later today.
