Gilroyans hoping for a break from wintry weather could be in for a snowy surprise this weekend.

Diana Henderson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Monterey, said there was a “fairly good” chance snow levels would drop to 1,000 feet by Saturday around Gilroy.

But will the snow fall closer to sea level, covering the Garlic Capital in a slushy, white blanket?

“Probably not,” Henderson said. “I won’t say it’s impossible, though. It will be cold, that’s for sure.”

A National Weather Service online forecast said temperatures could fall to as low as 32 degrees today.

Henderson said the overnight low for Saturday could fall to 33 degrees and drop to 30 by Sunday, with rain expected throughout the weekend.

According to Tom and Anne Hepner, who live about 100 feet above Gilroy on Redwood Retreat Road, they received enough snow for their grandchildren to play in 2006.

“The kids had a great time playing in the snow with their sand toys!” wrote Hepner on her family blog. She also blogged about receiving snow in 2008.

Henderson said she wasn’t certain when it last snowed at sea level in Gilroy, but said the date was likely close to Feb. 5, 1976 – the last time snow fell in the Bay Area.

The potential for more wet weather comes on the heels of last week’s soggy conditions, when storms poured 3.35 inches of precipitation, as recorded at the Gilroy Fire Department Chestnut station. On Feb. 16, a brief-but-pounding episode of hail even turned practice surfaces from green to white at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
