Gilroy – The Gilroy softball team ran into a familiar roadblock in its 4–0 loss to Notre Dame Thursday – a roadblock named Kim Reeder.

Reeder, Notre Dame’s Ohio State–bound pitcher, shut out the Mustangs (10–13, 1–5 TCAL) and allowed just one hit to GHS senior shortstop Kayla Aldridge in the win for the Spirits.

Despite being shut down offensively, Gilroy head coach Julie Berggren said the Mustangs did put forth a solid defensive effort, which held first–place and undefeated in TCAL Notre Dame scoreless until the sixth inning.

“They scored all four runs in the sixth inning and all four were earned,” Berggren said. “It was good to know we had good defense today.”

Notre Dame’s Jade Ohmann hit three–run homer off GHS pitcher Sarah Villar (10–11) in that inning. Reeder retired 15 GHS batters.

Maciel tears up the pool

Gilroy swimmer Santiago Maciel is back to his old self.

Recurring illnesses during the winter and earlier in the spring drained and nagged at Maciel early on in the swim season. But now, the senior is back in top form.

In Live Oak’s 107–73 team victory, Maciel was a bright spot for Gilroy, winning the 200m individual medley (2:04.88) and the 100m backstroke (57.70) and anchoring the 200m free relay team that took first with a time of 1:33.94.

The Mustangs’ Sam Whitaker won the 50m free with a time of 23.57. Finishing second to Maciel in the 100 back was Lee Walton, who swam a 1:04.27. Walton also took second in the 100m breast stroke and third in the 200m free.

The Gilroy boys’ JV squad posted a 97–53 team win over the Acorns.

On the girls’ varsity side, Danielle Roberts had the best finish of the day for the Mustangs, second place in the 50m free (29.528).
