Gilroy – The recent wet weather made for some soggy competition among the Gilroy, Live Oak and Palma boys’ golf teams at Gilroy Golf Club Tuesday afternoon.
“Gilroy Golf Club played at least four strokes harder today,” said Gilroy coach Eric Kuwada. “The grass was high and it was soggy still from the rains. We haven’t played here in a while because of the weather, so it was playing very difficult. … You had to keep it in the fairway or else you were in trouble.”
As a team, the Mustangs finished behind Palma (206), but ahead of Live Oak (255) with a stroke total of 219.
Gilroy’s top individual was sophomore Jordan Miller, who shot a three-over par 38. Juniors Chad Wilson (40) and Ryan Clark (42) rounded out the top three for the ‘Stangs. Junior Stephen Freeth also shot a 45 for Gilroy.
“I think the guys are beginning to get a feel for their games now. The younger guys need to learn to play within themselves,” Kuwada said. “We made a few mistakes and the kind of mistakes we made on a ‘normal’ Gilroy Golf Club (course) wouldn’t be too bad.
“But the conditions of the golf course dictate that, and Gilroy (GC) got back at us. We just need to continue to improve each match and learn from our mistakes.”
