Dear Editor,

Thanks to The Dispatch, and particularly staff writer Katie Niekerk and Chief Photographer James M. Mohs, for your excellent coverage of South County Housing’s 25th Anniversary Celebration at Bonfante Gardens on Oct. 20 (“25 Years Of Hope”, Oct. 20).

Our work over the past quarter-century to provide affordable housing and neighborhood services is a tremendous source of pride for everyone at South County Housing.

By sharing reflections from Juan Uranga, our first legal counsel and current Executive Director of the Center for Community Advocacy, Gilroy Mayor and longtime supporter Al Pinheiro, and the Arnandez family, proud homeowners in our Los Arroyos community, your article illustrated the positive impact on communities and families of the work we do to help provide affordable housing and life-enhancing neighborhood services to our renters and buyers alike.

Importantly, it also underscores the realities of “affordable housing” in today’s market. It’s all about providing a wide choice of top-quality housing types for a range of household income – from very-low income wage earners who work the field to those of moderate income who teach our children and protect our cities – so that as many families as possible can live in quality housing in good neighborhoods and achieve the American Dream of homeownership.

As a non-profit corporation with its roots firmly planted in South County, it has been an honor to serve Gilroy, Morgan Hill, San Martin and other communities in a four-county area over the past 25 years.

We sincerely appreciate the quality coverage of our work over the years by the reporters, photographers, editors and production staff at The Dispatch.

Again, our sincere thanks to you, and to the community, for the support and encouragement as we begin our next 25 years of, as our motto promises, “Building Community.”

Dennis Lalor,

Executive Director for South County Housing
