South Valley Middle School went on lock down for about 10 minutes earlier this morning due to a domestic disturbance off campus.
Police responded to an argument on Taft Court – right around the corner from South Valley – and took into custody a male who had been accused of brandishing a rifle, Sgt. Jim Gillio said. Police did not arrest the man but placed him on a 72-hour mental health hold. He will be transported to San Jose for evaluation, Gillio said. Gillio would not release the man’s name or age.
No children were in the home during the dispute and no shots were fired, police said. Gillio was not sure how many people were inside the residence during the incident.
South Valley Principal Greg Kapaku sent a recorded phone message to parents at 11:53 a.m. alerting them of the precautionary lock down due to the police activity on Taft.
“At no time did the situation come onto the South Valley campus or put our staff and students in danger,” Kapaku said in the message.
Normal classroom activity resumed after the incident.
