15 percent of the proceeds will go to society to protect
endangered birds
This month, Clos LaChance Winery in San Martin released the first wine under its “Threatened Species Series” label, which will help raise funds to aid conservation and preservation projects for endangered hummingbirds.
The wine, a unique Bordeaux blend from the winery’s Estate vineyard, features the Juan Fernandez Firecrown hummingbird on the label. Clos LaChance will donate 15 percent of the proceeds from the sale of these wines to the Hummingbird Society. The winery hopes to raise more than $25,000 for the organization, which works to protect endangered hummingbirds.
The Juan Fernandez Firecrown hummingbird is found only on the Robinson Crusoe Island in Chile and is on the verge of becoming the first hummingbird since the 1800s to go extinct. The bird is thought to have a 50 percent chance of being extinct within the next 10 years. Today, there are 28 species of hummingbirds considered at risk for extinction by BirdLife International.
