The Gilroy Mustangs will have five wrestlers vying for a Mid Cals title during tonight’s main event – the 14-match finals at Gilroy High School at 5 p.m.

Christian Goldstein had 13 points, Charles Walker had 12, and the Gilroy boys basketball team earned its first Tri-County Athletic League victory of the season, outlasting Alisal 47-38 on Friday night.

After Day 1 of the 32nd annual Mid Cals, the double-elimination tournament looks to be headed to a wild Day 2 and finals Saturday night. Host Gilroy High has a narrow lead on defending champion Selma at the conclusion of Friday’s all-day action.

It was a rough night all around for Gilroy teams. Aside from the Gilroy High boys soccer team, which tied San Benito 1-1, the local teams were on the wrong ends of the results. The CHS girls basketball and soccer teams suffered their first league losses, while the CHS boys basketball team dipped below .500 in the MBL.

The 32nd annual Mid Cals is in full swing at Gilrly High school this morning. The two-day tournament is in its preliminary stages, building toward the always entertaining finals under the spotlight on center mat.

Rivalries usually consist of teams trading wins game in and game out. But in boys soccer, the Gilroy and San Benito rivalry has been mostly one sided – tilting toward the Mustangs.

A Tri-County Athletic League dual meet featuring two of the Central Coast Section's top-three teams ensued Wednesday night as the No.1-ranked Gilroy High wrestling squad visited No. 3 Palma. The Mustangs improved to 3-0 in League duals with a 45-27 win, two days before the start of the 32nd annual Mid-Cal Classic at GHS.

Cynthia Sanchez scored 21 seconds into the match. Maggie Trigo tallied two minutes before the end of regulation. In between, the Gilroy High girls soccer team survived a handful of San Benito chances to claim a 2-0 victory in Tri-County Athletic League action Wednesday night in Gilroy.

Ten local football players will suit up for one final high school game at the 28th annual Salinas Jaycees All-Star Football game Friday night at Monterey Peninsula College.

It's all about the details. Before the Christopher High girls varsity basketball team took on visiting Monterey on Tuesday night, head coach Heather Stewart pointed out the necessity for her team to solidify the little things as it continues its climb to the top of the Monterey Bay League standings.
