GILROY—The Gilroy Garlic Festival provides a wealth of entertainment for its attendees, but behind the scenes it serves a much bigger purpose.

GILROY—The sound of helmets clashing and plays being called echoed through the stadiums and Gilroy and Christopher high schools this week. And that means it’s time for football.

Lauren Castro and Matt Penyacsek graduated from Gilroy High on June 11, but their names are forever enshrined in the school’s history.

The culture is slowly changing at Gilroy High and standards have been set high for the Mustangs' football program.

The Gilroy High football program will hold its first day of practice for all incoming freshman at 5:15 p.m. Monday. 

SAN JOSE—The shortest girl in the high jump competition was the one who stood tallest at the end.

GILROY—Gilroy High head wrestling coach Greg Varela is the National Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Region 7.

SALINAS—Lauren Castro incited fear into the hearts of softball players around the league all season.

SALINAS—Christopher High coach Ryan Dequin led his team to an incredible second-half turnaround, which earned it a No. 3 seed in the Central Coast Section playoffs.

GILROY—Just a few short weeks ago, the tracks at Christopher and Gilroy high schools were buzzing with athletes. On Tuesday, all that remained were four Cougars and one Mustang, as only five survived the Central Coast Section Semifinals on May 23.
