Eight Gilroy wrestlers left Palma High victorious Tuesday night. The Mustangs topped the hosts 57-15, losing only one match — heavyweight Santino Orozco lost 6-4 — and  forfeiting two (122 and 140). Nikko Villarreal (154) and Paul Fox (162) maintained their unblemished records, each notching a 'w' at the bout. Villarrel won his match by pin, while Fox won by fall.  Julian Carabajal (172) had the tough task of facing Palma's best wrestler, Martin Martinez. Carbajal was able to get the cradle in the third period to win by fall at 5:25. Gavin Melendez (108) got a nearside cradle at 1:14 to win by fall. Will Calderon (115) also won by fall at 5:03 of his bout.  Victor Daza (128) won by a 9-4 decision, while Victor Olmos (134) won by fall at 3:45. The Gilroy girls soccer team ended its two game skid against Pajaro Valley.

The Christopher girls basketball team held Salinas to single-digit scores for three out of four periods.

GILROY — The Christopher girls soccer team triumphed over crosstown rival Gilroy, 4-1, under the Friday night lights of Garcia-Elder Stadium at Gilroy High School.

GILROY — Sometimes even the best wrestlers need a little motivation. Heading into the 2014 Mid-California Wrestling Tournament, Nikko Villarreal’s coaches offered him a challenge — get 40 takedowns over the two-day competition.

GILROY — Heading into Friday’s opening day of the 2014 Mid-California Wrestling Tournament Nikko Villarreal was undefeated and had yet to be taken down. At the end of Day 1, nothing had changed. 

GILROY — This weekend Gilroy isn’t just the Garlic Capital of the World, it becomes the epicenter for high school wrestling as well.

For the third time in as many games the Christopher boys soccer team walked away with a tie.

GILROY — The Bert Mar Invitational has been in exsistence for four years and Christopher’s Jimmie Lopez has walked away a champion each time.

The morning of Jan. 10 was a dream come true for Cordero Gonzales. He packed up and hit the road to start the next phase of his life — joining the football program at Eastern New Mexico University.
