GILROY—The Christopher football team went home Friday night and checked another item off their list: win the league title.

GILROY—Thursday’s game against Presentation was bittersweet for Gilroy’s four seniors. While the 9-1 win over the Panthers was exactly the ending they hoped for, the graduating Mustangs were still in disbelief that they had played their final game at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Christopher went up against a tough Harbor, but displayed championship-style defense to come away with the win.

Each week we will recognize one area male and female athlete for their performances. This week's are:

GILROY—The Gilroy High wrestling program has a storied history of excellence, producing several California Interscholastic Federation state and Central Coast Section champions. The walls of the Bob Hagen gym are decorated with its multiple CCS team titles—the Mustangs have won 12 straight—and on Monday night, Gilroy added another honor to its collection: a proclamation from the City of Gilroy.

SALINAS—A year ago, Monica Ruelas was melancholic as she left Toro Park, having run a subpar race by her standards.

Christopher sent three players to the girls tennis playoffs, all of who advanced to the semifinals. Unfortunately for the Cougars, their season ended there. 

GILROY—Christopher’s last home game was Clare McCarry’s first on varsity—and she made it count.

Gilroy, meet your newest Monterey Bay League Pacific Division champions. 

Even though the Christopher football team led Pajaro Valley 42-0 at halftime, there was still plenty Coach Tim Pierleoni has to use as teaching moments for his boys.
